임도원은 인간과 인간 그리고 현대 사회 간의 관계에 관심을 가지고 있으며 이를 다양한 기술과 페르소나를 활용해 보여주고 있다. 최근에는 VR,AR,3D프린팅,모바일 장비 등을 활용하여 관객의 적극적인 참여를 요구하는 다양한 작업을 진행하고 있다. 이에 관련하여 서울대학교 경희대학교 수원대학교 등에서 강의하였다.
